Recruitment, engagement & retention of top-performers is a marketing problem.
Successful businesses create extraordinary products, services and customer experiences that align with the needs, wants and values of their well-understood target customers. Then, they communicate their value story in a way that attracts and engages those target customers. Finally, they consistently deliver that value in order to retain those target customers. This, we call ‘marketing’.
So it is with attracting, engaging and retaining top performers. Successful businesses understand the needs, wants and values of their target ‘top-performers’ and then they create and communicate an employment experience (their culture), compensation package and career opportunities that attract, engage and retain those top performers.
So, how will thinking of recruitment, engagement & retention like the marketing problem that it really is, change your approach…and your results?

Now, to this week’s important topic:
Create a performance ‘Wish List’ for each person on your Management & Supervisory Team:
This week I’m sharing with you a ‘Tool’ that I use with our Biz Coaching clients to focus them on what each person on their Management and Supervisory Team needs to do better.
Below is an example of how one of our Biz Coaching Clients completed this process for his Chief Financial Officer who has both an Accounting Designation and an MBA.

1. Work in the office 4 days a week. She has not been to the office since Covid, in 2020. | ||
2. Get more done. | ||
3. Come up with better ways to get things in her department done more efficiently and effectively. | ||
4. Show much more initiative in everything. | ||
5. Make specific business recommendations to improve profitability. | ||
6. Be less emotional when dealing with other team members. | ||
7. Connect with me better. Not just wait for me to move things forward. | ||
8. Hire better people. | ||
9. Figure out how to use our accounting systems better. | ||
10. Be a great CFO. |
This Coaching Client was struggling to survive. Not until he completed this exercise for each of his Team members did he come face-to-face with the performance shortcomings of each. For example, Brenda, his CFO was a total non-performer, had not shown up in the office since 2020, was being paid $200,000 a year, and wanted a raise. He rated her as a 7 out of 10. In my opinion, she’s a 3.
Using this example above, create a performance improvement ‘Wish List’ for each of your Managers and Supervisors. You’ll be amazed at the results.
For each area of performance improvement that you list for each Team member, sit with them to determine what they will do to get on track and what might be holding them back. Agree on what you will do to remove roadblocks and to coach and encourage them. Performance improvement is a team sport. And, always get a ‘by when’ commitment for each area of improvement that you agree on. Then, follow up to make sure it happens. ‘The world is run by those who follow up.’
