(Time to read this Blog is about 4 minutes)

Before we get to the main topic, here are a few things to get you thinking or smiling:

  1. My Biz Quote of the week:
The world doesn’t need one more mediocre anything!  What are you doing to be extraordinary, to stand out, get noticed and be the clear and compelling ‘wise choice’ for your target customers?

And then, how effectively are you telling your compelling value story?  There’s no point being ‘the best’ if you’re also the best kept secret.”
    …Donald Cooper.

  2. Quick Biz Tip:
    Set aside time to THINK!

As business owners, leaders and managers, we think of ourselves as people of action.  We rarely think about setting aside time to just ‘THINK’.

So, set aside an hour each day or, bare minimum, an hour each week to just sit quietly and think about your business, or Department.  Here’s a List of 10 questions to ask yourself to get you started.  Note: Create a ‘Thinking Time Topic File’ to accumulate more ‘Thinking Time Ideas’ as they occur to you.

    1. What will our market and our industry look like in 3 to 5 years?  What are we doing to prepare for that?  Will we lead, follow…or fall by the wayside?
    2. How can we delight, amaze and engage our target customers?  How can we proactively communicate with them more effectively? What do they need to know that we can ‘coach’ them on?
    3. Who’s productive in our business…and who’s not?  How do we more effectively measure performance? How do we more effectively deal with non-performance?
    4. How can we more effectively communicate with all Team members?
    5. What must we do to achieve world-class operating efficiency?
    6. What systems, processes and training do we need?
    7. How must we improve our recruitment, screening and onboarding processes?
    8. How can we become the preferred employer for the best people in our industry?
    9. Are we building a ‘Talent Pipeline’ so we have the people we need in the future?
    10. How can we better acknowledge, thank, reward and encourage our top performers?

  3. Fun Fruit Facts. Peru, exported almost no blueberries in 2010, but became the world’s largest exporter of blueberries in just 10 years.  South Africa has replaced Spain as the world’s largest exporter of oranges.  South Africa now exports more dollars worth of oranges than diamonds.

The business point here is this.  Every country and every business must constantly reinvent itself.  Those who don’t, will fade away.  So, what new product, service or customer experience will you be offering five years from now that will keep you relevant and profitable?

  4. A fiscal reality check. The U.S. government, with the Party in power being the traditional Party of fiscal restraint, spent $432 billion more than it collected in the month of July alone. The gap was 48% wider than July 2025.

The business point here is to ask, “How carefully are we planning and monitoring cash flow in our business?”  When we run out of cash, we run out of options…unless we’re the government and then we just print more money.

  5. AI update: AI dramatically reduces the cost of cooling large buildings by analysing thermal loads and directing a ‘Thermal Energy Storage System’ to store unrequired cooling capacity as chilled water or ice to be released during periods of peak cooling need.

Now, to this week’s important topic…

Defining Leadership & Management:

Defining Leadership & Management:

There’s lots of discussion about the difference between ‘Leadership’ and ‘Management’.  Here are my thoughts.

No one in an organization is only a leader, or only a manager.  Leadership and Management are rolls and many people in the organization play both of those rolls, every day in carrying out the full scope of their job.  To make things even more complicated, in many smaller businesses, the ‘Leader – Manager’ is also a hands-on ‘doer of many things’…so that’s three hats to wear on one head.

  1. Leadership is the part of your job where, working with your Team, you:
    1. Set a clear Vision for the future of the business, or your Department, and a clear and effective Strategy and Action Commitments to get you there.
    2. Create, support and constantly reinforce a Culture of clarity, commitment, empowerment, world-class efficiency, urgency and accountability. And a Culture of integrity, opportunity, fairness, diversity, inclusion, respect, encouragement, empathy, acknowledgement, safety, passion and joy.  These are what I call the 2 sides of the ‘Culture Coin’.
    3. Set clear Values and Standards of performance and behaviour.
    4. Build, mentor and inspire a world-class, effective Team, and a ‘Talent Pipeline’.

  2. Management is the part of your job where you work with your Team to:
    1. Organize resources.
    2. Set priorities and create clear expectations and standards.
    3. Create, communicate and execute Plans.
    4. Develop systems and processes.
    5. Coach, train, develop and encourage your people.
    6. Make sure that everyone on your Team knows why their job is important…and why what we all do together is important.
    7. Resisting the temptation to let some of your reporting points to ‘delegate up’, by getting you to do their job for them.
    8. Measure, acknowledge, celebrate and reward performance…and deal effectively with non-performance.

So, how are you doing in each of these key rolls?  How easily are you distracted to being a ‘doer of things’ when you should be more focused on Leading and Managing?  What needs more of your time and attention…and when will you start?

That’s it for this week…

Live brilliantly and be kind to each other!
